This month, our blog series is called Love, Your Skin and will focus on different ways to show your skin some love, from head to toe!
Most treatments, even prescription medications, do not work overnight; they may need several weeks or even months to take full effect. With some treatments, skin may seem to get worse before you see improvement. Feel free to ask your dermatologist, pharmacist or aesthetician about the treatment or medication that you are considering to find out anticipated results time and about any possible downtime. Below are a few common examples.
Acne may seem to get worse before getting better. This is because benzoyl peroxide will first bring to the surface any breakouts that were lying in wait, so to speak, to emerge. After that, it works to keep pores clear to reduce the amount of future breakouts.
It may take 1-3 months to see the best results, depending on acne severity (mild=sooner, severe=longer)
Used for aging skin as well as acne, retinol is known to irritate skin when someone first starts using it. Redness and flaking are the most common side effects for first time users. Try a small amount at first and gradually increase to the amount recommended by your doctor as your skin becomes accustomed to the ingredient. If your skin is still very sensitive, you can try applying retinol over your moisturizer. Less of the ingredient will reduce irritation, although it will also reduce the effects.
It typically takes 2+ months to see the best results.
Anti-Aging Skincare Products
Most non-retinol anti-aging creams and serums are less irritating to skin, so most skin types will start improving without any real down-time. The first order of most of these products is hydration, which may improve the appearance of skin rather quickly, but for the full effects, it will probably take at least 2 months of regular use to see the best results.
After an IPL treatment, the targeted dark spots often become darker at first. A few days later, the darkened cells will fall off, much like after a chemical peel.
Results may be seen after one treatment, but the rest results follow a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
Depending on the type and depth of the peel, skin may or may not be immediately improved. A gentle option such as an enzyme peel will show immediate benefits following the peel. After a more intensive option, such as the Perfect Derma Peel, skin may become darker and tighter over the next 2 days or so, and then begin peeling on day 3 or 4. Peeling typically continues for around 7 days following the peel.
Once the peeling is complete, the full effect is visible. Like IPL treatments, peels are best when done in a series.
