Chances are you’ve been shaving since your teen years, but do you experience skin irritation, razor bumps, ingrown hairs, or other such problems associated with shaving. A poll by the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) found that 78% of men who shave experience irritation. In this post, we’re just going to give you a quick overview of shaving and some tips. Hopefully, one of the tips or steps may help your skin out next time you shave!
- Wet the area. Getting the hairs & skin wet softens them, and makes it easier to shave
- Apply shaving cream or gel. Shaving cream also helps soften the hairs and reduce irritation. If your skin is sensitive, you may want to leave the shaving cream on for about a minute before shaving so that the aloe or other ingredients can better penetrate the skin to soothe & calm it prior to shaving.
- Shave in the direction that the hairs grow (not against the grain). Keep your skin relaxed and avoid repeating strokes.
- Follow up with a moisturizer.
A Few Healthy Skin Tips for shaving:
Electric razors tend to be less irritating than standard blades, so if you have sensitive skin, you may want to try an electric version. If you really like regular blades, select a single or double bladed razor. Multiple blades can often lead to increased irritation.
Change the blades approximately every 5-7 shaves. This will prevent shaving with a dull blade, which makes nicks and cuts more likely and also will prevent bacteria from building up, which can lead to red bumps and other skin problems.
If you have acne, take special care when shaving. It is recommended to use either an electric razor or disposable razors if you have acne, and remember to shave lightly.
Ingrown hairs & razor bumps:
Try a shaving cream with glycolic or salicylic acid to clear out your pores and reduce these problems
If your skin is still very sensitive, you may want to consider laser hair removal. Even if your skin is not sensitive and you simply want the hair permanently gone, this procedure may be for you! At our office, we offer laser hair removal with the innovative Light Sheer Duet machine. To permanently remove all of the hairs, it will typically take multiple treatments, around 3-4 for most people. Read more about the procedure here on our website.
