You may or may not have heard of this ingredient, but kojic acid is present in a variety of skin tone correcting products, including our own Bella Derma EvenTone pads!
What is it?
Kojic acid is an skin-lightening ingredient that is naturally found in mushrooms, rice and soy.
What does it do?
This acid inhibits the production of melanin (skin pigment), causing the upper layers of skin to lighten. For this reason, kojic acid is often present in skin-tone evening products to get rid of unwanted dark spots or discoloration on the skin
It works best for:
*Aging skin – targets the dark, age spots (aka “liver spots) on the skin
*Melasma – helps to even out the skin tone
*Acne – can help fade acne scars
Anything to look out for?
Kojic acid can irritate skin, especially if your skin is sensitive. A test patch is recommended when using a new product.
As with all skin lightening products, kojic acid can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays (melanin is the skin’s natural defense against the sun). Plus, UV damage is largely responsible for age spots, so remember to slather on the SPF and protect your skin to avoid working against your skin care product and to prevent skin cancer.
