OK, so you have fine lines or droopiness or dark spots that you want to get rid of. First line of attack? A topical anti-aging product. These types of products may be a cream, serum, foam or moisturizer. What should you look for in a product? Should you follow the “hype” when new products and ingredients emerge on the market?
Find a product that…
*Targets your area of concern specifically. An anti-aging product that promises to combat all types of skin aging is not likely to work (or at least not noticeably) and may not work effectively on the area(s) that bother you most. Also, eye creams & serums are generally separate from other facial anti-aging options because the skin is thinner & more sensitive, so it is best to have a separate product for the eye area if that is your concern. Turkey neck? Try a product designed for that, such as Nectifirm.
*Is for your skin type. If your skin is dry or oily or sensitive or whatever it may be, look for a product that is good for that skin type. Otherwise, you run the risk of creating a different problem for your skin.
*Is trustworthy. The AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) recommends making sure any product has a consumer hotline that you can call for any questions as a sign of credibility. Also, you can look for anti-aging products in the same line as other products you use. If Neutrogena has worked well for your skin, why not look for anti-aging products by that company. Or ask your dermatologist! Most dermatology offices sell products in-office that they trust & recommend to their patients. In our office, we have our own line of products, Bella Derma, which has a few anti-aging options, and we sell several other options (including Vivatia, which is currently on special this month) that are by companies that we trust.
Look for products that include…
Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and are one of the only types of anti-aging ingredients that have been scientifically proven to work. There are true retinoids, such as tretinoin or tazarotene, which are available in prescription-strength products, and retinol, which is similar, but gentler and commonly available in OTC products. Retinoids fights signs of aging the skin by improving the cell function at the molecular level. They boost the body’s ability to turn over skin cells(rejuvenate) and decreases the breakdown of collagen while also stimulating new collagen to grow.
For a retinol product, we recommend Vivatia by PrecisionMD or Renova
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (incl. glycolic, lactic & malic acids) are also commonly found in anti-aging products because they have been shown to work & have become a staple in the world of skin care. These acids help exfoliate away old, damaged skin cells to reveal the newer cells below. By doing so, skin feels smoother & softer, skin tone seems more even, and fine lines & wrinkles are less noticeable.
For an AHA product, we recommend Bella Derma 10% Glycolic Acid face wash
Antioxidants (such as Vitamin C, polyphenols, & CoQ10) help fight signs of aging by protecting the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules in the body that weaken and damage your cells. They come from environmental sources, such as UV rays or pollution, but also from within your body as a by-product of stress hormones & other toxic reactions. Antioxidants intercept the free radicals before they start damaging other cells. They are found in a variety of foods, including berries & green tea, but are also added into many skin care products so that the antioxidants are delivered right to the affected area(s) of skin.
For antioxidant products, we recommend the Bella Derma Triple Antioxidant Serum and Bella Derma Green Tea Moisturizing Lotion.
If you have melasma, uneven skin tone, or dark spots, your dermatologist may recommend a product with hydroquinone. This ingredient is currently only found in prescription products because it can be easy to misuse or overuse. Hydroquinone works by reducing the amount of pigment produced in your cells, thereby reducing the darkness or discoloration. The important thing to remember is to use it only as instructed, for the prescribed period of time and to remember to always apply sunscreen while using it.
We recommend Bella Derma Even Tone pads.
Other than that, you will run across all sorts of “new” ingredients promising “amazing” results, but we have yet to find one that beats the tried & true ingredients above that have been used in skin care products for decades.
