We have all forgotten our sunscreen a time or two, picked at a pimple we shouldn’t have or done any number of bad skin habits in our lifetime. Unfortunately, skin remembers. Maybe the damage shows up quickly, like a popped pimple that is now a red or dark spot on the face. Other times, like with sun damage, the effect of those bad habits does not show up for years.

Now that you’re really trying to improve your skin, what can you do to repair past mistakes?

~~Option #1: Products~~

Products and simple solutions can help! The results will be gradual and may not be overly dramatic, but you can make your skin feel & look noticeably better if you stick with it over the long-term.

Look for a product that targets uneven skin tone if you have skin discoloration, dark spots or acne scars. These products usually contain an ingredient such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, or tretinoin. Many products are available over-the-counter, but options with higher concentrations (for better results) usually require a prescription from your dermatologist.

Try an anti-aging skin care product. Anti-aging skin care products often target texture because this is a common part of skin aging. These products typically contain ingredients like retinol, green tea extract or other polyphenols, key vitamins & CoQ10 which all work together to improve skin’s tone, texture & appearance. If you have a specific problem or concern, try a product that specifically targets that one thing for the best results.

~~ Option #2: Laser therapy, peels, & other procedures ~~

If you are hoping for a more dramatic or faster result, there are a few cosmetic procedures that can improve your skin and reverse some of the damage.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

IPL Therapy uses a laser to penetrate the skin and correct a variety of skin imperfections including broken facial vessels, brown spots, acne scars, freckles, wrinkles, and scars. This virtually painless procedure can be used on the face, chest, neck, hands and arms – all of which are the most common places for noticeable skin damage. Multiple sessions are recommended for optimal results, but the results will be faster and better than using skin care products.

Chemical Peels

Peels are not just for a day at the spa! There are several peels that really repair damage and improve skin tone & texture. A variety of strengths are available to best target your specific skin concern without much discomfort.  Deeper strength peels, such as TCA peel, are best for more extensive damage, but even a gentler peel, such as the glycolic or salicylic acid peels, also have great results. Like IPL, peels are best in a series but often show results after the first treatment.

Neurotoxins (Wrinkle Relaxers)
