You know to wear broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen & to reapply, but what are some other ways can you keep your skin looking its best?

Don’t forget your lips!

Use a lip balm with sunscreen (SPF 15 or so) to keep your lips hydrated & protected from the sun. Our lips have thinner skin than other areas, no oil glands and typically less melanin production than other areas of skin, so they are a prime candidate for becoming dry & chapped or even burning.


Stay in the Shade

Sunscreen is just one part of being Sun Safe. Aim to protect your skin from direct UV rays in other ways as well such as using a beach umbrella, setting up under a shady tree, and wide-brimmed hats. And don’t forget clothing! While not technically “shade,” clothing works in a similar way in that it filters out UV rays, keeping them from getting in contact with your skin. We get that it’s hot outside and let’s face it –jeans provide a lot of UV protection but can be downright uncomfortable when hanging out on the beach all day. Light cover-ups do not provide as much UV protection, but every little bit counts.


Make Use of Antioxidants

Topical antioxidants have been shown to help reduce, and to a certain extent reverse, skin damage due to UV exposure. Dr. Beverly often recommends that people apply an antioxidant lotion or serum before applying sunscreen because it adds an extra level of protection. A recent study by Yale University also suggests that applying antioxidants to the skin after a day in the sun may also help slow down the DNA damage that UV rays cause.


Stay Hydrated

This is important for all-around health because dehydration has a variety of potentially dangerous side effects. For skin -- if the body is dehydrated, your skin will feel the effects as well. As we mentioned in an earlier post, one of the skin’s main functions is to provide a barrier to reduce moisture loss and prevent contaminants from entering the body. If skin is dehydrated, it cannot do these functions fully or properly, which leaves the body open to potential irritants. How much water you need to drink can vary depending on the person & activity level, but remember – if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so grab some H2O!


Cleanse & Moisturize

Rinse off after you’ve left the water to clear your skin of any irritants that may have been in the water (it is a living ecosystem, remember) and then clean your skin thoroughly when you get home. Since salt water & sand are both natural exfoliants and may have dried out your skin, so avoid being too rough or abrasive with your skin. Then, moisturize– and don’t forget your feet too!
