In our last post, we gave you an overview of green tea- where it comes from and how to brew it at home for optimal flavor and benefits retention. This week, we will let you know about some of the benefits of green tea.

You may have heard that green tea is great for helping to reverse sun damage to the skin, but did you know that green tea may also prevent the sun damage and guard against non-melanoma skin cancers?

A 2010 study by the Dermatology Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that green tea, whether applied topically onto the skin or ingested by mouth, offered a notable amount of photoprotection (protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays) and helped protect against skin cancer growth! The main free radical (also called a polyphenol) in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), has been noted in several studies for its apparent role in preventing skin tumors from starting or growing. According to the studies, the polyphenols in green tea promote rapid DNA repair, thereby keeping skin cells from becoming cancerous.

Green tea should not be used as a substitute for sunscreen or other forms of sun protection, but rather used in addition to them for optimal benefits. The next time you head to the beach, maybe add a layer of a green tea lotion or a sunscreen with green tea, brew your favorite iced green tea, slather on the sunscreen, and hit the waves!
