This month, our blog will focus on anti-aging skin care! What should you do to prevent premature skin aging? Can anything be done to reverse or improve different aspects of aging skin? What if I only have one sign of aging skin- how do I target that one area? All of these questions (and more!) will be tackled throughout September blog series, so stay tuned!

We all age, but sometimes we feel that our outward appearance does not reflect the youthfulness that we still feel inside! What are the top recommendations by dermatologists to keep skin looking young by preventing premature skin aging and reducing any already-existing aging skin issues?

*Sun Protection. Did you know that some researchers have found that up to 90% of visible skin aging is due to UV exposure?! People may be aware that sunscreen is important to prevent sunburns and skin cancer, but most are not aware that UV damage also leads to skin aging! UV rays damage the skin’s DNA, affecting the body’s ability to make collagen and elastin (which keep skin lifted, firm & supple) as well as lead to clusters of melanin (leading to dark “age spots”). When we’re young with high cell turnover, the body can cover this up to a certain degree, but eventually bad habits catch up to us and all of that unprotected time in the sun begins to show as rough skin texture, wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration. Good news – while what has been done in youth cannot be reversed, you can still make sun protection part of your routine to prevent further damage and help support your skin.

*Be Aware of Strong Facial Movements. Certain wrinkles or fine lines are strongly tied to certain common expressions or habits. Squinting motions can lead to crow’s feet and furrows at the brow, so remember to wear your sunglasses and wear reading glasses if you need them (don’t just squint through it!). Heavy usage of straws as well as smoking can lead to fine lines around the lips, often called “smoker’s lines.”  Frequent frowning can lead to deep groves in the glabella area, often referred to as the “11s.” This does not mean that you should stop all strong movements and try to keep your face frozen!!! Keep smiling! Just be aware of some unnecessary and avoidable movements such as squinting when you could wear sunglasses and keep the area relaxed.

*Establish a skin care routine. Neglecting your skin can also accelerate skin aging. Not moisturizing skin, for example, can damage the skin’s natural protective barrier, which already naturally becomes less effective with age. No matter what your age, if you have not yet established a skin care regimen – start doing so! A proper routine supports your skin’s strength and function. What are the must-haves? Cleanser, toner, moisturizer -- simple as that. Other products can also help skin by focusing on one of more problem conditions or areas of concern, but a simple routine will still improve your skin. Afraid of “chemicals”? Feel free to use natural products! You can even DIY, but I would recommend that you choose your DIY recipes from reputable sources or the finished product may prove ineffective or irritating.
