A 2014 survey by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) found that 68% of those surveyed were bothered by submental fullness (also known as the "double chin")! Affecting both men and women, this area has been very difficult to treat short of full cosmetic plastic surgery which often requires significant downtime, pain, and expense. Influenced by a variety of factors including genetics, aging, and weight gain, the double chin is notoriously difficult to reduce through diet and exercise; it stubbornly holds on even in otherwise slender & healthy individuals.

KYBELLA™ is the first and only FDA-approved injectable that contours and approves the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness (also known as the "double chin"). This new injectable is made of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occuring molecule that targets and permanently destroys the unwanted fat cells, resulting in a slimmer, younger profile.

This innovative new treatment involves a series of injections into the submental (below the chin) fat area. How many injections are needed may vary based on the size of the area to be treated. The Kybella procedure uses very fine needles, similar to BOTOX & dermal fillers, so pain and discomfort is minimal. In our office, we also use a mild local anesthesia to further minimize any discomfort. Typically, 2-4 treatments spaced about one month apart are required to achieve the desired look.

  • Only FDA approved injectable to treat the double chin area
  • Non-surgical procedure
  • Minimal to no downtime
  • Results are permanent

What is Kybella?

Kybella™ is a cosmetic injectable composed of deoxycholic acid that treats & improves the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness ("double chin"). It is the first and only such injectable to receive FDA approval.

Who is Kybella For?

Kybella™ is for adults who have significant fat in the area below the chin that wish to reduce that fullness for a slimmer & more youthful look & profile.

As it has not yet been studied, we do not recommend Kybella™ treatment if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or if you are  breastfeeding or plan to begin breastfeeding.

What is a Treatment Like?

The Kybella™ procedure involves a series of injections in specific points within the target area. How many injections are needed per treatment will vary depending on the size of the area to be treated and how much fat is present.

The needles used are very fine, similar to those used for BOTOX, Juvederm, and other such cosmetic injectables. A mild local anesthesia may be used to reduce any pain or discomfort.

What About Side Effects and Downtime?

There is minimal downtime. Patients may experience some swelling soon after the procedure, so while you may resume most normal activities, we do not recommend having a treatment too soon before big event. You should avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 hours after treatment.

Side effects are usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects of Kybella™ include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area. At our office, we use CytoActive at the injections sites to reduce the risk of bruising. While rare, more serious side effects including trouble swallowing and nerve injury have occurred.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients will need 2-4 treatments spaced one month apart to achieve the desired appearance. In some cases, up to 6 treatments will be needed. Dr. Roland Beverly or Alisa Wang PA-C will consult with you prior to or at the time of the first treatment to give you a more customized estimated number of treatments.

How Long Will the Results Last?

The results are permanent. Once the affected subcutaneous fat cells have been destroyed, they will not be able to store or accumulate fat ever again. Once the desired aesthetic appearance has been achieved, retreatment of the target areas is not expected.
